Digital communication is subject to the maintenance and performance of networks of infrastructure that make possible the transmission of messages. In the eventual situation of a massive breakdown of these networks due to the effects of a natural disaster or social crisis: How can we still transmit information in the form of messages ?

The Lightcoder is an analog communication device. A "rebozo"-style bag, made out of reflective mylar that use natural or artificial light to encode messages into morse code. The Lightcoder is equipped with a map of Manhattan and a morse code alphabet and a broken digital compass. Inside the bag you will find a lantern, aspirins, rad-block, placebo, dust mask, utility knife, a hand made shape-lock cup, and fire starters.

The pocket lightcoder was created as a portable version of the rebozo. It is a pocket mirrorwith the morse code alphabet printed on the other side. This portable version can be usedas a communication device in public space to create light mobs or to send secret messages to fellow urban dwellers

The Lightcoder is a symbolic object that explores the possibilities of survival in an urban
environment, bringing attention to the vulnerability of digital technology and embracing
its entropy through alternative interaction that rely on outdated technologies
